Manipur violence: Woman shot dead by armed men in Imphal East, face disfigured

In yet another firing incident in Manipur, a woman was shot dead in Imphal East. The incident was reported on Saturday evening in Sawombung area of the district, said officials.

The miscreants shot the 50-year-old in the face. The shooting took place at the home of the woman, they said. The attackers however did not stop at just shooting the woman and disfigured her face before fleeing the place.

The Manipur Police were carrying out raids and trying to catch the culprits. The area where the shooting occurred has been cordoned off and even houses in the nearby localities are being searched.   The police have already recorded the statements of people from nearby localities.  The woman who died belonged to the Maring Naga community and was said to be suffering from some mental health issues.

A woman was shot dead outside a school just a day after educational institutions opened after long closure due to violence. This killing was reported from Imphal West district.

The northeastern state of Manipur has been on the boil ever since a tribal solidarity march was held there on May 3, against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The state has witnessed over 100 deaths ever since the violence broke out.

A visit by Home Minister Amit Shah failed to calm the situation and yet another killing shows that the state has still not returned to normalcy.

In Manipur Meiteis are in a majority with a population of 53 per cent while Nagas and Kukis form the rest 40 per cent of the state’s population. While Meiteis live in Imphal Valley, the Nagas and Kukis occupy the hill districts.
